President

Ioannis Sarmas

Born on the island of Kos, Greece, on 21 March 1957. Married (1987) with two children (born 1989 and 1990).
Awarded a Degree in Law from the University of Athens (1975-1979), graduated top of year.
Won scholarships from the French Government (1980-1984) and the Hellenic Scholarships Foundation (1980–1983, not taken up).
Awarded Diplômes d'études approfondies (Diplomas of Further Studies) from the University of Paris II, Sorbonne, in Criminal Law (1980-1981), Public Law (1982-1983) and Public Finance (1983-1985). Doctoral Thesis in Law (1981-1985), awarded the distinction of très honorable.
Served as an officer in the Greek Air Force during national service (1984-1986). Sat recruitment competitions organised by the Greek Council of State and the Greek National School of Public Administration (attained first place in both competitions).
Magistrate at the Greek Council of State (1987-1993).
Magistrate at the Hellenic Court of Audit (1993).
Deputy Head of the Court.
Member of the European Court of Auditors (2002). Term of office renewed (2008 -2012).
Dean of Chamber I (Preservation and management of natural resources). Responsible in his capacity as a Member of the European Court of Auditors for auditing the European Central Bank, the European Investment Bank and the operating expenditure of both EU institutions and bodies and the European Schools. Responsible in the same capacity for developing the methodology of both the Court and the research sector. Served as chair of the committee
responsible for assessing the external activities of Members of the Court. Member and chair of the audit committee for Europol.
Vice President of the Hellenic Court of Audit and President of Chamber III (2013-2019).
President of the Hellenic Court of Audit (2019)
Taught Law Methodology and Public Finance at the Greek National School of Public Administration (1989-1999) and lectured in the Jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of the European Communities and of the European Court of Human Rights at the Greek National School for the Judiciary (1997-2001).
